The Auditory Field: The Spatial Character of Auditory Experience

It is widely accepted that there a visual field, but the analogous notion of an auditory field rejected by many philosophers on grounds metaphysics or phenomenology audition lack necessary spatial structure. In this paper, I argue common objections to existence are misguided and that, contrary tradition philosophical scepticism about spatiality experience, it as richly experience — in some ways even more so. By carefully considering boundedness audition, along with how sounds their sources experienced occurring within surrounding acoustic environment, we can gain better understanding (i) our space (ii) conditions for sensory fields general way does not privilege vision over other senses.
